Photoshop Elements

Elements is a popular free tool for basic image manipulation. It’s a simplified version of Photoshop that provides tools for adding text and effects to images and for turning them into templates for documents and labels. However, Elements only allows you to add a maximum of five layers to an image.

We used to use Elements 6 or 7 for editing images until we got Photoshop. But, these days, Photoshop is the be-all and end-all of editors. We’ve noticed some Photoshop image editors are not compatible with Elements, but Photoshop Elements is so close to Photoshop that you can only tell the difference between the two by their name.

As you’d expect, it has many of the features of Photoshop, but here’s a list of the differences.

Elements 10 Photoshop Compatible Files

We noticed that there are some files that Photoshop Elements can’t open. They include:

Adobe Studio: Positive and Negative

Portrait Photo Effects Kit: Click to Embiggen

Photoshop AI: Rounded Edge Round Brush

Retouch: Brush

Photoshop: Font Book

Adobe Cartoon: Photo Effects

As you can see, it’s totally possible to use Elements as the best edition of Photoshop. And with a little patience, you can even work on files that won’t open with Photoshop.

In this article, we want to make sure you know everything there is to know about the differences between Elements and Photoshop. Also, there are a lot of differences between Elements 10 and 7, so we list them at the bottom of the article.

Let’s get started with the differences.

1. Classic Mode

In Photoshop, you can work in different modes (see the sidebar). What’s great about this new edition of Photoshop Elements is that you can use the classic mode. Why not? It’s the same program, just a different interface. I think it’s a great way to learn about Elements and Photoshop. It also gives you a taste of how Photoshop works.

Classic mode is very similar to “old Photoshop”, which you may still remember. It’s the version of Photoshop that you can get from the box. The interface is easy to use, and you don’t have to use the menus and go through too much to change all the settings. The biggest thing to know is that all the settings are in the “image” tab, instead of having to go into the preferences (the bar at the top).

2. Windows Power Saving

Both Elements 10 and Photoshop save your work to a special file that Adobe calls “output”. Photoshop outputs to Adobe Bridge, but Elements outputs to either Acorn or Disk.

Elements stores your files in the same folder with their names having a “_output

Another week, another series of great posts from the brilliant Artem Tran.

Artem writes: “In my previous post, I created a custom style for text boxes that looks like the one in the new WPF-based TweetDeck. I used a binding to assign the background colour to the TextBox, but I don’t have an unlimited number of styles that I can use if I wanted to create more customized styles (like an all-white version of a coloured text box, for instance).

“The standard WPF Styles are tied to the Control template that you use (in the visual editor). These are the colours and fonts used throughout the application, and you can’t change them without changing the template. If you want to change the template, you have to do it manually.

“By creating a copy of the default Control style, you can make modifications to it. When you are ready to use your new style, you simply copy it to your resource dictionary and assign the new style to a text box.”

Artem also demonstrated how you can create a cascading style that allows you to dynamically set the colour of a control based on the colour chosen in a previous control.

How do I make a String into a hexadecimal number?

Hi I am trying to convert a String into a Hexadecimal number in Objective C. I know how to convert hex into decimal but I want to know how to the reverse.
I have tried something like this but it didn’t work.
int intValue = [NSString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)cString hexadecimalString:2];

This is the same thing as int intValue = [NSString stringWithUTF8String:(char *)cString hexadecimalString:2];
You’re missing the second parameter. Replace the 2 with a 1 or 0 to get the different bits of the string.
int value = strtol(str, NULL, 16);

Use strtol and deal with the return value manually:
int x = strtol(“0123”, NULL, 16);

Rails-ujs and :remote => true triggering multiple AJAX requests

I have a form that uses rails-ujs :remote => true and ajax:true.
Everything works fine, except that when I submit a form, I end up with two AJAX requests sent to the server. One for the rails-ujs event and one that adds the form to the DOM.
I suspect that something is going wrong with the way my controller is set up, but not sure if it’s Rails or UJS, or JQuery.
The problem appears only when :remote => true
Thanks in advance for the help
Update 1:
resources :graphs do
get “style/index”, :on => :collection

resources :graphs do
post “create” => “graphs#create”, :as => :create_graph, :on => :collection, :remote => true

Thanks to the help from Ryan Bates, I figured out the problem.
The :as option should be specified as an object, not a string.
Instead of :as => :create_graph, I should have done: as :create_graph.
